How to take a home inventory

A home inventory makes a claim faster and more accurate. Here is a simple way to build one.

By the InsuranU team Updated July 20264 min read

If U ever need to file a claim, a home inventory is the difference between a fast payout and a slow argument over what U owned.

Room by room

Walk through each room with your phone, filming or photographing furniture, electronics and valuables. Open closets and drawers for anything easy to overlook.

Capture the details that matter

  • Receipts or estimated purchase price
  • Serial numbers for electronics
  • Brand and model where visible
  • Photos of any damage or wear already present

Keep it somewhere safe

Store copies in the cloud, not just on the device U used to film it, so it survives whatever happens to the home.

After any major purchase, and at least once a year.

Do I need receipts for everything?
