Understanding your car insurance policy

Your declarations page holds almost everything that matters. Here is how to read your policy and what proof of insurance really is.

By the InsuranU team Updated July 20265 min read

Your policy looks dense, but almost everything you need sits on one page. Learn to read it and you will spot gaps, overpayments, and renewal creep in minutes.

Start with the declarations page

The declarations page, often called the dec page, is the summary at the front. It lists who is covered, which cars, your coverages and limits, your deductibles, and your premium. If you only read one page, read this one.

Coverages and limits

Each coverage has a limit, the most the insurer will pay. Liability protects other people. Collision and comprehensive protect your own car. Check that your limits still match your life, because the defaults you picked years ago may no longer fit.

Your deductible

The deductible is what you pay on a claim before cover kicks in. A higher deductible lowers your premium but raises your out of pocket cost when something happens. It should never be more than you could comfortably cover tomorrow.

Common questions

What is a declarations page?

It is the one-page summary of your policy: drivers, cars, coverages, limits, deductibles, and premium.

Is a digital insurance card valid?

In most states, yes. Keep it in your insurer app, and a paper copy in the car as a backup.
