What drives your home insurance risk score

Insurers score every home before they price it. Here is what goes into that score, and what U can influence.

By the InsuranU team Updated July 20264 min read

Behind every quote is a risk score built from your home, your location and your history. Some of it U can change, some U cannot.

Location risk

Weather exposure, wildfire and flood zones, crime rates and distance from a fire station all factor into location risk, and none of it is in your control.

Home-specific risk

  • Age of the roof, wiring and plumbing
  • Construction materials and fire resistance
  • Swimming pools, trampolines and other liability hazards
  • Security systems and smoke detectors

Your history

Past claims and, where allowed, your credit-based insurance score both feed into the final number.

Common questions

Can I see my own risk score?

Not always directly, but your insurer can usually explain what drove your quote.

Does my credit score affect my premium?

In many states, yes, through a credit-based insurance score. Some states restrict or ban this.
